How To Select Successful Descriptive Essay Topics For Grade 7

Students in Grade 7 are considered new writers. They are learning the basic styles of essays, how to write a topic sentence, and how to research properly. One of those types of essays is the descriptive paper. Students in this age group should write about what they know. A good way to select a topic is to have the students fill out a questionnaire. The survey can ask questions such as:

3. 3. Who is your favorite singer-why and what songs doe she or she sing
4. 4. What is your favorite movie-why, describe it
5. 5. Do you like gaming and why-which games are the best and the worst
6. 6. Do you enjoy playing a sport, which one, and why
7. 7. Do you have an unusual talent, if so what is it
8. 8. What is your favorite subject and why
9. 9. Where do you like to vacation and where would you like to vacation-give the reasons
10. 10. When have you been the most frightened-what caused it
11. 11. What is the greatest lesson you have learned-was it a tough one to learn
12. 12. Who is your hero and why-what has the person done to warrant being called a hero
13. 13. If you could have a super power, what would it be and why-do other super heroes have this power
14. 14. Who is your favorite band and what is your favorite song-dose the band still perform, what genre are they, and have they won awards
15. 15. Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to study when you go to college

Once the survey is completed, look and see where the student provided the most information. This is probably the subject the student will want to write on for the first 7th grade essay. Knowing the material will help because then the writer can focus on the structure and not worry too much about researching the topic. After determining the subject, a topic sentence must then be completed. It may take a few tries to get the perfect one. Then the teacher will guide the student to forming an outline for the composition. All of these steps can be challenging for a new writer, so have the student start with the topic he or she knows the most information about.
