Writing a good English essay without any mistakes requires a few things. As you sit down to write your paper you may be struggling with your introduction. How can you make it effective and interesting? Use these strategies below to grab the attention of your reader and flesh out the first paragraph:

• Try and locate a startling statistic that illustrates for the reader the seriousness of the problem your paper will address
• Use a quote from an expert in your field (but you must introduce them before you use their quote)
• Insert a common misconception against which your thesis will argue
• Provide some background information if it is necessary for the reader to understand your paper
• Use an anecdote or a short narrative to exemplify why you opted for the topic. If you are writing an essay which calls for you to reflect on your previous experiences this might be the best way to go about the introduction.
• If you are writing a scientific paper, you might explain a key scientific concept necessary for the reader to understand your topic, or use relevant literature that builds to your contribution to the field.

But once you have mastered the very first sentence in your introduction, you still have to write the remainder of the introduction. This can be difficult for students who often try and fill in the introduction with unnecessary items or misplaced items that belong in another part of the essay. In order to really flesh out the introduction you should avoid these mistakes:

• Avoid putting in a dictionary definition, especially for a word that the reader knows (for example: don’t start your paper with “Webster’s dictionary defines “teaching” as…)
• Avoid repeating the assignment instructions, especially if the assignment was written by your teacher. Rewriting the task will not be effective
• Avoid giving long explanations or details that should be reserved for the body of your essay.

Once you have finished composing the body and conclusion for your essay you need to take some time away from your paper before you return for proofreading. This is an essential step which will double check that you followed the guidelines and remove any errors which were made.
